We raise Large Black Pigs, a rare heritage breed that is famous for their bacon. Their short muscle fibres make their meat extra tender. Their meat is micromarbled so it is self-basting and deliciously moist. Their rich, complex flavor is prized by top chefs, 5 star restaurants and knowledgeable consumers.

The breed originated in England and is ideal for pasturing. Their black skin provides much greater protection from the sun than other breeds, they forage with ease and their amiable disposition makes them a delight on the farm. We love our pigs!

Our pigs are free to root and roam through the fields and woods, to play, run, dig, and bask in the sun. The pastures provide them a beneficial diet of roots, grasses, leaves, worms, grubs and bugs. We supplement this with non-GMO feed, free of corn, soy, and canola to ensure their nutrient needs are met.

They are hormone and antibiotic free. They are raised on land that is farmed without the use of herbicides, pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. 

Our animals enjoy a much longer life span than factory animals. They are allowed to mature to full weight slowly instead of being fed grain heavy diets intended to fatten them quickly. This practice also encourages the formation of beneficial Omega 3 fats instead of unhealthy Omega 6 fats. This is especially important for healthy lard. The meat not only tastes better, but it is better for you.

An Unlikely Way to Save a Species: Serve It for Dinner

The Large Black nearly became extinct during the 1960s because it was not suited to industrial pork production. It is being saved by the increased interest in pasture raised pork by consumers. In 2015 the Large Black graduated from Critically Endangered to Threatened.

Sometimes you’ve got to eat something to save it. We only tell this to our customers, not our piggies!
